today http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/38817-youve-been-signed-temporary-profile-fix.html
the client's computer would say in a balloon in the notification area at every login:
You've been signed in with a temporary profile.
You can't access your files, and files created in this profile will be deleted when you sign out. To fix this, sign out and try signing in later. Please see the event log for more details or contact your system administrator.
the device was brought to me by a third party, so i hadn't directly spoken to the client, but it came with a written note that said installed macaffee 39.99 and the user's password. i am not sure what the root of the issue was, but the device was infected with multiple browser hijackers and adware, which i removed.
there was only one profile choice on the login screen, which looked like a normal custom profile, but upon logging in it says Preparing Windows, as if it were the first time logging into the account. the password provided logs you into the "temporary profile," though the username is reflected on the start menu and in user accounts.
the users directory multiple DefaultAppPool* and TEMP.User-PC* subdirectories. there is also Default.migrated, and the actual user profile data appears to be located in the subdirectory called User. it is supposed to be a custom personal online profile, and the username is not actually User, but that was the profile that was created during the setup of the computer initially, and the client then converted the local account to their personal account. it keeps everything under the original subdirectory name. this is something that i am familiar with. the TEMP folders appear to be created at each attempt to login to this account.
I created a local admin account without any problem, to complete this fix. (followed steps on the site linked)
it now says Logging In instead of Preparing Windows, but it's installing apps and other new profile stuff...
the profile now uses a new user subdirectory which reflects the actual username. i am copying everything i backed up into here and i believe everything appears to be back to normal. i had to re-delete the proxy setting in internet properties in order to navigate online.
beautiful! thank you eightforums.com!
